When Should You Take Maternity Portraits?

Beautiful maternity portraits can be a tremendous, one-of-a-kind memento of one of the most meaningful times in your life. Many women have admired their friends’ maternity photos and have their hearts set on them from the moment they get pregnant. But then it’s time to figure out the logistics, and that’s where you may get stuck.

Timing is important when your body is changing so much from one week to the next. When is the best time in your pregnancy to take maternity portraits? As an experienced maternity photographer who has created these precious heirlooms for countless moms, I have the answers you’re looking for.

When to Take Maternity Portraits

The short answer is to take your maternity portraits between 30 weeks and 36 weeks into your pregnancy. That’s the “sweet spot!” You’re far enough along that your baby bump is well-developed and prominent enough for us to show it off in your portraits, but not so far along that you’re too uncomfortable to enjoy your photo shoot.

With that said, the timing can vary, of course. If your baby bump is growing slowly, we might aim for the later end of that window, around 34-36 weeks, to give that beautiful bump plenty of time to grow. If you’re having twins or you have another type of higher-risk pregnancy that could lead to you going into labor early or needing bed rest for the last months of the pregnancy, we’ll aim for the earlier end of that time window.

When to Book Maternity Portraits

We’ve established when your maternity portraits should take place, but how far in advance do you need to actually book your session? Planning ahead is important to be sure that I can get you in on a date that works for you, and my schedule can book up months in advance, especially during busy photography seasons like the fall.

I suggest that you reach out to me early in your second trimester. This lets us schedule your session during the ideal timeframe for you and for a date that fits your schedule. It also gives us time to plan a beautiful photo session that has the look and feel you want.

With that said, if you’re further into your pregnancy and are now realizing that you’d love maternity portraits, don’t be afraid to contact me! You never know when I might have cancellations or openings in my schedule, and I would love to be able to create stunning heirloom artwork for you and help you celebrate this incredible journey you’re on.
