If you’ve ever tried to book a family photographer at the last minute—especially during busy seasons like spring or fall—you already know how quickly calendars fill up. As a photographer and a mom, I know how fast life moves… and how frustrating it is to realize you waited too long.

The Importance Of Family Photos

Whether you're expecting your first baby or thinking ahead to your next family photo session, here’s a quick guide to help you plan ahead and get the date (and season) you really want.

Maternity Sessions – Book for 30–35 Weeks Pregnant

Your bump is beautifully round, you're still relatively comfortable, and there's less risk of baby arriving early. That sweet spot between 30–35 weeks is when I typically schedule maternity portraits.

When to book: During your second trimester

Pro tip: Consider combining your maternity and newborn sessions when you inquire—I offer packages for both!

Newborn Sessions – Book by the Start of Your Third Trimester

For studio newborn sessions, we’ll tentatively reserve a date based on your due date, then finalize once your baby arrives. Studio sessions typically take place when baby is 7–21 days old, while in-home sessions have more flexibility and can happen up to 6 weeks postpartum.

When to book: 28–32 weeks pregnant

What to expect: I’ll take care of all the props, styling, and soothing. Your job is to show up and soak it all in. (Pajamas and coffee welcome.)

Milestone & Birthday Sessions – Book 1–2 Months in Advance

Whether it’s your baby’s first birthday or their high school graduation, milestone sessions are a joyful way to document your growing child. These are playful, personality-packed sessions designed around your kid.

When to book: At least 6–8 weeks ahead of needing your digital gallery.

Timing tip: If you’d like to use the photos for party invites, book even earlier!

Family Sessions – Book 2–4 Months Ahead (Especially for Fall)

Family sessions fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons like October and early November. If you’re hoping for fall foliage, golden light, and holiday card perfection, start early.

When to book:

  • Spring sessions: January–February

  • Fall sessions: June–August

  • Summer sessions: April–May

Not sure what season is best for you? I’ll help you choose based on your family’s vibe and schedule.

You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out

Planning ahead doesn’t mean you need every detail nailed down right away. When you inquire, I’ll help you choose the best session type, season, and location—and we’ll make a plan that fits your family’s needs.
