Summer Family Photos in the Creek | Chalfont, PA Family Photographer

Sometimes the best family photos happen when we stop trying so hard to take family photos.

For this summer family session in Chalfont, Mom and Dad wanted photographs that felt authentically them with their two little boys, ages three and one. So instead of asking two tiny humans to stay clean, sit still and smile at me for an hour, we did something much more fun: we got in the creek.

And yes, everyone got wet.

A Summer Family Session Made for Little Kids

One of my favorite things about photographing families with young children is letting the kids actually experience the location instead of constantly asking them to perform for the camera.

At three and one, these boys had far more interesting things to do than pose for pictures. There were rocks to investigate, water to walk through, mud to discover and plenty of opportunities to splash Mom and Dad.

So that's what we photographed.

Of course, we still made time for a few of those everyone-together-looking-at-the-camera portraits parents and grandparents love. But so much of this gallery came from simply giving these boys room to explore and letting Mom and Dad join them.

The result feels less like a collection of poses and more like a little snapshot of what being their family felt like during the summer they were three and one.

Family Photos Don't Have to Mean Perfectly Behaved Kids

I think one of the biggest misconceptions parents have about family photography is that their children need to cooperate for the session to go well.

They really don't.

Your three-year-old can get his shirt muddy. Your one-year-old can decide he'd rather be carried. Someone can wander away from the carefully planned family portrait because they've discovered the world's most fascinating rock.

That's childhood.

My job isn't to eliminate all of that from your family photos. It's to work with it.

Giving kids something to do takes the pressure off everyone. Instead of constantly asking them to smile, we're creating opportunities for real reactions and connection—which is exactly what this family wanted from their session.

Ending With a Splash

By the end of this Chalfont family photography session, everyone was already in the water, so there was really only one reasonable way to finish:

A splash fight.

Mom and her three-year-old started sending water flying, and any remaining concern about staying dry officially disappeared.

Those are the moments I love most—the point in a session when everyone has stopped thinking about the fact that they're being photographed and is simply having fun together.

Because years from now, these boys won't be three and one anymore. Their legs will be longer. They'll probably be considerably less impressed by rocks. And Mom and Dad won't be able to scoop them up quite so easily.

But they'll have photographs that show exactly what this little season of their family looked—and felt—like.
