For this studio newborn session, that meant photographs of their newest little guy on his own, of course, but also plenty with Mom, Dad and his very proud big brother. And because there was one more member of the family who couldn't be left out, their dog came along too.

When you book newborn photos, I don't want the session to feel like it's only about creating a handful of perfectly posed photographs of your baby. Those photographs are absolutely part of it—but so is documenting what your family looks like now that this new little person is here.

Especially when there's an older sibling.

Big siblings don't need to be perfectly cooperative for an entire newborn session. They're allowed to be excited, curious, wiggly kids. We can get the photographs we need from them and then give them a break while I focus on baby.

And when they're ready to come snuggle their new sibling again, we'll make room for that too.

Yes, You Can Bring Your Dog to Your Newborn Session

I know that for a lot of families, the dog was the first baby.

So if leaving your dog out of your first family portrait with your newborn would feel wrong, bring them.

My studio is dog-friendly, and we can include your pup in some of the family photographs without needing them to participate in the entire session. That gives us the best of both worlds: a photograph that really represents your whole family and plenty of time to concentrate on your new baby.

Photographs With Mom and Dad Matter, Too

I know getting in front of the camera immediately after having a baby isn't always the part new parents are most excited about.

But these are some of the photographs I think are especially worth taking.

Your baby will never remember being this tiny against your chest—but they'll have these photographs to see it.

Once we've documented everyone together, there's plenty of time to focus entirely on baby.

My newborn sessions include a mix of simple portraits and styled setups, with the focus staying on all those details that are going to change ridiculously quickly—the tiny fingers, toes, eyelashes, wispy hair and expressions that are completely unique to your baby.
