Philadelphia Branding Photographer | Editorial Author Portraits

Your brand photos should feel like you — not like you stepped into someone else's idea of what a professional headshot is supposed to look like.

For this Philadelphia branding session, my client came to me with a beautifully specific vision. An aspiring YA fantasy author, she wanted portraits that felt elevated, editorial and literary without becoming costume-y or overly themed. Think timeless and organically beautiful, with natural light, authentic expressions and just enough quiet wonder to hint at the immersive stories she writes.

So that's exactly what we set out to create.

Philadelphia Branding Photography That Doesn't Feel Corporate

Personal branding photography doesn't have to mean a blazer, a laptop and a coffee mug.

Especially for creatives, your photos have another job: they need to communicate something about what it feels like to experience your work.

For this session, that meant finding the balance between polished and approachable. We chose a Philadelphia location with lush greenery, wildflowers, beautiful natural light and simple architectural elements that gave us variety without competing with her.

A book made sense as a subtle prop for an author, but we didn't need to spell out the rest. No elaborate fantasy styling. No costumes. No pretending to write thoughtfully in a notebook for 45 minutes.

Instead, we let the setting, light and expressions do most of the storytelling.

Creating Editorial Author Portraits With a Little Bit of Magic

One of my favorite things about her inspiration was the phrase "quiet wonder."

That's a pretty perfect example of why I ask branding clients how they want their photographs to feel, rather than simply asking what photographs they want.

We created classic portraits she can use for an author bio or professional profile alongside softer, more editorial images surrounded by greenery and flowers. Some are bright and approachable. Others feel moodier and more cinematic.

Together, they create a gallery that gives her options as her author brand grows — while still feeling cohesive and unmistakably hers.

Your Branding Session Should Look Like Your Brand

You don't need to arrive at a branding session knowing exactly where to stand, what to do with your hands or how to translate your brand into photographs.

That's part of my job.

Tell me what you do. Tell me who you're trying to reach. Send me the oddly specific Pinterest image you can't stop thinking about. Give me words like literary, European-inspired, warm, sophisticated and quiet wonder.

We'll build from there.

The result should be photographs that are useful for your website, social media, press features, author bio, book jacket or whatever comes next — but more importantly, they should actually feel like they belong to you.

Looking for a Philadelphia Branding Photographer?

Whether you're an author, artist, small business owner or creative professional, branding photos don't have to make you feel like you're playing the role of "business person."

They can be polished without being stiff, strategic without feeling generic, and professional while still leaving plenty of room for personality.

If you're looking for a Philadelphia branding photographer who will help you turn the way you want your brand to feel into photographs, I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up.
